By Roman J. Uschak, Staff WriterThe 32nd Annual Nutley St. Patrick’s Day Parade, sponsored by the Nutley Irish American Association, will take place on Saturday.
This year, the event will feature an all-Nutley lineup of honorees.
The 2010 contingent consists of Grand Marshal Jack Kane, Deputy Grand Marshal David Hutchinson, Nutley Irish Member of the Year Joe Castles and Queen of the Parade Danielle Irwin.
Kane has been a member of the Nutley Irish since 1983 and has also served two terms as NIAA president, according to the parade advertising book. He has also been the master of ceremonies for the parade the last seven years.Kane’s family emigrated from Ireland in mid-to-late 1800s. He is the fourth of six children and a lifelong Nutley resident.
He attended St. Mary’s School and graduated from Nutley High School before enlisting in the Army where he served in Korea and earned the National Defense Medal and the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal.
He spent 35 years with the Teamsters Union, and is a long-time member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Kane’s family includes his wife, Patty, four children and 10 grandchildren.
“I want to thank the officers and members of the Nutley Irish for selecting me to represent them,” said Kane. “I’m sure my parents will be smiling down on me and my family as we march down Franklin Avenue on March 6.”
Hutchison, who was born in Germany where his father served with the Air Force, grew up in Bloomfield and is a graduate of Bloomfield High School.
He holds an associate’s degree from Johnson and Wales University, and both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Fairleigh Dickinson University.
Hutchinson can trace his Irish ancestry back to the 1840s, while his family has resided in Nutley since the early 1900s. He currently serves as executive chef in the Department of Dining Services at Hoffmann-LaRoche, where he has worked since 1987.
Hutchinson has coached the Nutley Irish Recreation Soccer Team for three winning seasons and has also served as director of the “B” League in Nutley American Little League. His family includes wife Nicole, and children Jake and Skylar.
