Notre Dame’s ‘Rudy’ to speak at fundraiser

By Roman J. Uschak, Staff Writer
The Mike Geltrude Foundation will host its annual fundraiser tonight at 6:30 p.m. at Nanina’s in the Park, Belleville, and the featured guest will be motivational speaker and former University of Notre Dame football player Daniel Ruettiger, known to all as Rudy.
Rudy’s exploits as a walk-on player in the 1970s with one of the nation’s top gridiron programs were chronicled in the 1993 film “Rudy,” starring Sean Astin in the title role.
The Mike Geltrude Foundation, which is named for the former Nutley resident, educator and coach, works to raise both awareness of skin cancer, specifically malignant melanoma, and also funds for related research. The foundation was established four years ago, just before Geltrude’s passing from the disease.
“I think our foundation is growing, and the film we finished is getting national recognition,” said Dan Geltrude, son of Mike Geltrude. “I think celebrities want to be involved, in my judgment.”
