Nutley High School wrestlers Bobby Trombetta and Vin Scuttaro advanced to the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association tournament based on their top-three finishes in their weight classes at the Region 4 tournament at West Orange High School on Feb. 27.
Trombetta, a freshman, finished second at the 103-pound weight class, losing to Passaic Tech’s Kevin Manthi in the final.
Scuttaro, a senior, recorded a 12-1 victory over Montclair’s Evan Miles to take third at 130.
The State tournament will be held March 5-7 at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City.
Junior Michael Ferinde, senior Dante Montes, senior Frank DeLorenzo and sophomore Nick Gaeta were the other NHS representatives at the Region tournament.
NHS head coach Frank DiPiano was proud of Trombetta’s performance.
“I think Bobby had a real good tournament,” said DiPiano. “He had a goal to be down in AC this year and he reached that goal. He is a tough freshman who I feel has the ability to do real well down at the State tournament.
“He has some real quality wins and has had some real good matches that have him battle- tested and ready to make a run.
“It is hard to beat someone three times and it showed in his match in the semifinals against a good wrestler in Chris Rosetti from Bloomfield. He knew the mistake he made in his last match against him and knew what he had to do to win. In the finals match with Kevin Manthi, the size of the senior was just too much for him. There is no doubt in my mind that he can wrestle with him.”
Scuttaro also did exceptionally well. “Vin had a real good weekend,” said DiPiano. “A couple things didn’t go our way in the semifinals match, but Vin did not let that get to him. He stayed focused and would not let anything come into his way of reaching the State tournament for the first time. To lose the way he did and come back and win two matches in the wrestleback round by dominant fashion, shows a lot about the type of kid he is.
“I have said it before and will continue to say it: The kid never goes away. He is constantly in your face and staying after it. To see him get down to AC is a great accomplishment. And we are very proud of him.
“Hopefully he is able to surprise some people down there and make a little run at getting on the podium on Sunday.”
DiPiano also commended the efforts of Ferinde, Montes and DeLorenzo who also competed on Feb. 27. Ferinde reached the third-place consolation, but lost to Andrew Polidore of Queen of Peace.
“Our other three wrestlers that competed over the weekend have nothing to hang their heads about. They all went out and competed hard.
“We would love to be taking all of them down to Atlantic City, but sometimes things do not work out the way we want them to.
“They had a great season and should be proud for how far they made it this year.”
