NHS hockey team has great State run

The Nutley High School varsity ice hockey team enjoyed a strong run in the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association Public B tournament.
The Raiders, seeded 18th, stunned No. 2 seed Kinnelon before losing to 10th-seeded Hopewell Valley, 6-1, this past Sunday in the quarterfinals at Codey Arena in West Orange.
Senior Joey Fierro scored the first two goals of the game to lead the Raiders to a 3-2 win over Kinnelon on March 4 at Skylands Arena in Stockholm.
But the Raiders’ run ended against Hopewell Valley, which scored the first four goals of the game before Nutley freshman Will Paro scored on a power-play at the end of the first period.
The Raiders finished the season with a 15-6-7 record.
Senior Andrew Zinicola broke a 2-2 tie as the Raiders scored three unanswered goals in the third period to beat 15th-seeded Sparta, 5-2, in the first round on March 2 at Skylands Arena. Junior Dan Koslecki and senior Tyler Morgan scored the final two goals of the game to seal it. Fierro and junior Brandon Perdon put the Raiders up 2-0 in the first period.
