NHS girls' hoops' win streak reaches eight games

The Nutley High School girls’ varsity basketball team defeated West Side and Clifton last week to extend its winning streak to eight games.
Grace Montgomery scored 18 points and added four assists and Tonianne Dematteo had 10 points, three rebounds and two steals in the 51-42 home win over West Side on Jan. 19.
Adriana Luzzi had eight points,  four rebounds and three steals; Jaimie Towey had five points and eight rebounds and Eileen Purcell also had five points and five rebounds for the Lady Raiders. Julia Seremba had three points and five rebounds and Sarah Montes had two points and three rebounds in the win.
Dematteo had 17 points, six rebounds, four assists and four steals and Towey had 15 points, eight rebounds and two steals in the 53-35 home win over Clifton last Friday Jan. 20. The Raiders improved to 9-3. Purcell also had 11 points, six rebounds and six assists and Montgomery had eight points, five rebounds and two assists.
The Raiders received the No. 14 seed in the Essex County Tournament. The Raiders will begin play on or by Feb. 2 and will host the winner between No. 19 seed Bloomfield and No. 26 Newark Vocational. The game between Bloomfield and Newark Vocational must be played on or by Saturday Jan. 28.
The top seed is Shabazz in the 26-team field. Montclair is seeded second. Mount St. Dominic is the No. 3 seed.
