NHS boys' bowling team wins SEC-American for third year in a row

The Nutley High School boys’ varsity bowling team clinched the Super Essex Conference-American Division championship for the third straight season.
The regular season ended with a very exciting week of bowling at Brunswick Zone in Belleville.
The NHS girls’ team swept Barringer on Jan. 31. Laura Lambroschino again had a great day rolling a 518 series.  “Laura is only a freshman and has shown a great deal of improvement this year and should be one of the top bowlers in the state in the coming years,” NHS head coach George Ackerman said. “She comes from a bowling family; her brother Angelo, led the Raider boys the last two years and her dad also bowls.”
The boys’ team bowled down all week and still fared pretty well.  On Jan. 31, they were without sophomore Vin Amato. First-year bowler Parthkumar Patel stepped in and rolled a respectable 490 series highlighted by a 185 opening game, a game that ended in a tie with Barringer.  The boys never gave up and ended up with the tie on the very last ball thrown by both anchors.
The Raiders easily won the last two games and wood setting up an exciting Friday Feb. 3 position round.
The boys entered Friday needing to win one game to maintain sole possession of first place in the SEC-American for the third year in a row. If they got swept, they would be co-champs with Bloomfield.
Game one was close until the eighth frame when Bloomfield started stringing strikes to capture the win. Game two started close and then it was Nutley that took off.  Chris Monda contributed a 223 and Tyler Huey again rolled a solid 215.  Vin Amato’s 161, along with super sub Parthkumar Patel’s 170, swept Nutley to the victory and the league title again.
Bloomfield is a truly great team and to its credit came back and rolled a solid 863 series to close out the year, Ackerman said.
“I am so proud of this group as they came into the year untested and left as champions,” said Ackerman of his team.
The girls’ team got swept by Bloomfield to close out its season in second place for the third year in a row.  The Bloomfield girls were again very tough and missed very few spares throughout the season.
“For Nutley to step up its game, we must become more disciplined with our spare shooting,” Ackerman said. “Overall the season was a success. All new bowlers showed improvement from Day one to the end of the season. This year we only lose one senior boy, Tyler Huey, and one senior girl, Vidhi Sonani. Their leadership will be missed. Good teams have to have talent, but in order to reach their ultimate goal, they need good leadership and Tyler and Vidhi provided that and more.”
